Essential Barbed Wire Guide Podcast

Introduction

The barbed wire is something that you will find in almost all enclosures. It is made up of a very flexible steel wire that has sharp barbs. It is the most preferred enclosure material that is used along with hardened steel posts. This type of enclosure is apt for keeping livestock within the section. They also prevents any wild predators from entering the area. As an effective deterrent to the livestock to not venture out of the enclosure, the barbed wire remains the best choice.

The same holds for any wild animal wishing to enter the section to prey on the livestock. The barbed wire initially had its origins within the military setup.

It was found to be very good for use in the outside world as well. After the Civil War, people used barbed wire for broader purposes. Lucien B. Smith first patented the barbed wire. During the days of the Wild American West, many of the cattle ranchers used such wires to protect their livestock by building fences with it.

History of Barbed Wire

Its history can be traced back to the days of the Wild American West as mentioned above. It then quickly made its way into Europe after the use in the Civil War and then during the Cold War as well. The wire also played its part during the Vietnam war. The US developed the first patent for its use.

Different Varieties of Barbed Wire

After a modest beginning with its usage as just a fence, the utility value of the barbed wire manifested itself in many other ways. Different types are listed below

  • Standard: This is used for securing private and public properties and also as construction fences.
  • Razor: When it comes to razor wires, the choices are varied. Some of the popular ones worth mentioning are the galvanized razor wire, cross razor wire, flat razor wire, straight type razor wire and welded razor wire. All these types are used to make excellent security barriers. They are also portable and extremely rugged due to the usage of stainless-steel blades.
  • Double barbed wire: This is a barbed wire with two strands. It is used mainly as fencing at prisons, highways, private properties, railway yards.
  • High tensile: The high tensile barbed wire has many uses. This is due to the ability to withstand temperature fluctuations. Military installations, private properties fencing and other such properties use it extensively.
  • Smooth: This barbed wire has a smooth finish and does not cut into the flesh when handling it. The usage of this barbed wire is prevalent at cattle farms.
  • Concertina: The Concertina wire can be flat as well as in the form of coils. They are used for chain link fencing. This type of barbed wire is run as loops on walls and fences. People know the concertina wire for its aesthetic appearance, easy installation and flexibility.
  • Chain linked fence: This is a type of weaving fence with galvanized wire that is PVC coated. It is generally used to fence gardens, parks, sides of roads. The chain link machine knits it. A more durable mesh can be made with this chain linked barbed wire fence.

The Manufacturing Process

The above-mentioned barbed wire types are all made using the process of galvanization. The GI wires used to make them have a zinc coating that renders the wires rust proof and free of corrosion. The process starts with the preparation of a molten bath. The sheets are immersed into this bath to prevent rust. The sheets are then with the help of machines made into different types of wires for various uses.

Benefits of the Zinc Coating

  • Even finishing of the wires
  • The ability of the wires to withstand high rusting and corrosion. Harsh weather conditions is not an issue.
  • Ease of portability when handling and bundling them.

The barbed wire making machine is used to make them. Two wires are the input that is fed into the machine. They are twisted such that they form a cable.

One more wire is then introduced into the machine from its side and also twisted into these wires. Then the two-point barb is formed by cutting the wire at a specific angle on both the sides.

If four-point barbs are required then two of the wires are twisted and cut.The materials used are typically galvanized steel. The other popular material is the r galvanized high-tensile steel.

These wires are also coated with PE or PVC. The advantage with PVC coating is the different colours you can get for attractive looking fencing to be done. The tensile strength is typically between 30-45 kgs/sq.mm.

Benefits of Barbed Wire

  • They are good protectors of an area as well as can act as separators of areas
  • They are affordable and easy to install.
  • It is not easy to surmount these wires for animals and thus they are good for fencing.
  • They are durable, can withstand weather conditions.
  • People cannot cut barbed wires easily
  • They are not flammable.

Disadvantages of Barbed Wire

  • They can cause damage to the skin if not handled properly.
  • There are chances of barbed wire getting stolen for scrap metal.
  • They are not very effective to prevent humans from crossing over. Applications of barbed wire.

Main Applications of Barbed Wire

  • Fencing
  • Containment of animals
  • For adequate security
  • Decoration fencing
  • To mark lines of property
